Hry govt announces ‘Shaurya Award’ in name of police martyrs

CHANDIGARH: Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Wednesday announced a ‘Shaurya Award’ in the memory of 71 state police personnel who have laid down their lives in line of duty.

Addressing the family members of Haryana police martyrs at national police memorial in Delhi on Wednesday, Khattar said under this award a prize money of ₹11,000 in memory of each police martyr will be given to a student for displaying valour, every year in the block in which the school is located and where the police personnel had studied.

A government spokespers­on said during the state-level function, families of all 71 policemen who made supreme sacrifice since formation of Haryana in 1966 were honoured.

The chief minister announced that a state-level police memorial recognisin­g the bravery and courage of martyrs of state police force will be constructe­d in the State.

A book titled ‘Martyrs of Haryana police’ highlighti­ng heroic deeds of the cops was also released on the occasion.

Khattar said an ex gratia grant being given to family members of police personnel, who die in the line of duty has been enhanced from ₹10 lakh to ₹30 lakh. An insurance cover in case of death due to accident ₹30 lakh is also being given under an agreement with a private bank. The CM said that in case of death in an encounter there is a provision of giving job to one of the dependents of police martyr.

Among others present on this occasion were chief secretary DS Dhesi, director general of police (DGP) BS Sandhu and a host of senior police officers.
