JAMMU : A soldier from Punjab was killed and three others injured after Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district for a second day on Monday, defence officials familiar with the matter said.

“Pakistani army resorted to unprovoked ceasefire violation in Sunderbani sector along the LoC on Monday. In the incident, Rifleman Karamjeet Singh was critically injured and later succumbed to his injuries,” defence spokesperson Lt Col Devender Anand said.

The 24-year-old soldier belonged to Janer village of Moga district of Punjab and is survived by his parents, he added.

According to army officials, ceasefire violations by Pakistan have increased after the IAF targeted terrorist group Jaish-eMohammed’s camp in a crossborder strike on February 26, 12 days after 40 CRPF personnel were killed in Pulwama.

Rupinder Singh, uncle of the slain jawan who is also a retired army man, said the faimly is grief-stricken but they are proud of the supreme sacrifice made by Karamjeet for the country.

“The country comes first,” he added.

He, however, said the Indian government should talk to Pakistan to put an end to hostilities so that soldiers don’t get killed.

Meanwhile, Moga deputy commissioner (DC) Sandeep Hans said the army jawan’s body is likely to arrive here on Tuesday. Sub-divisional magistrate Narinder Singh Dhaliwal called on the family members of the slain soldier pn Monday.
