TMC COMPLAINS TO EC ON MODI TRIP
KEDARNATH/NEW DELHI: Amidst a controversy over his visit to Kedarnath and Badrinath shrines during the “silent period” for the last leg of polling, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday thanked the election commission (EC) for the permission, even as the Opposition said his trip violated the model code of conduct (MCC). Congress MP Pradip Bhattachraya and Telugu Desam Party chief Chandrababu Naidu have both separately written to the election commission.
JAMMU : Curfew was relaxed for few hours in some areas of Jammu and Kashmir’s Bhaderwah town on Sunday following an improvement in the situation after Thursday’s violence over death of 52-year-old villager in a firing incident.
Nayeem Ahmed Shah was killed and another person injured when they were fired upon near Nalthi Bridge in Bhaderwah on Thursday. The murder triggered violent protests in the area, forcing the authorities to impose a curfew in the town, which continued for the fourth day on Sunday.
The curfew was relaxed for an hour in Passri Bazaar area from 3.30pm and Seeri Bazaar area from 5 pm.
However, restrictions remained in force across the town and its surrounding areas. “The relaxation period passed off peacefully and no untoward incident was reported. The curfew will remain in force through the night and a call will be taken for further relaxation after accessing the situation on Monday,” said Doda deputy commissioner Sagar Doifode.
Meanwhile, prominent citizens of Bhaderwah met the Doda deputy commissioner at Government Guest House on Sunday to discuss measures to restore peace in the area.
Army was called out on Thursday to assist the civil administration maintain law and order in the town. The security forces, including police and CRPF, were seen conducting patrolling at sensitive locations.
