MANSA: A 25-year-old man died after the bike he was riding hit a stray bull on a link road near Jawaharke village in Mansa. This is the third accident involving stray cattle in Mansa this month.

“Sunny Singh, a labourer, was returning home after buying milk on Friday evening when a stray bull came in front of his bike. He was rushed to the Mansa civil hospital from where he was referred to Rajindra Hospital, Patiala,” said Tarlochan Singh, sarpanch of Jawaharke village said.

Due to severe injuries, Sunny died during treatment on Saturday, said Dalel Singh, investigating officer, adding that the body has been handed over to the family.

Inquest proceedings have been initiated under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

Sunny was the sole breadwinner of the family. He is survived by his wife Veerpal Kaur and two children.

Upset over Sunny’s death, relatives and villagers staged a dharna and refused to cremate his body. They demanded ₹10 lakh relief and government job to a member of the family.

Mansa deputy commissioner Apneet Riyait said there was no policy to provide ₹10 lakh relief or a government job to the kin of those killed in accidents. “Since the family is poor, we are trying to help them financially through the Red Cross and other charitable organisations in the district. The administration can write to the government if some help can be given from CM’s relief fund.”
