Gang targeting liquor vends busted, 5 held

JALANDHAR: Police on Saturday busted a gang of robbers and arrested five of its members who used to target liquor vends at gunpoint in the region.

The police recovered two pistols, three cartridges and an SUV (sport utility vehicle) from those arrested.

The accused were identified as Pawandeep Singh (24), Sandeep Singh (44), residents of Sunra village in Phagwara , Jaspreet Singh (33) of Bhode Samrai, Sukhvir Singh (35) of Khusropur village and Paramvir Singh (34) of Mehtabgarh village in Kapurthala district.

Jalandhar senior superinten­dent of police (SSP) Navjot Singh Mahal said that a team led by CIA (crime investigat­ion agency) staff in-charge Shiv Kumar was patrolling near Panj Peer turning when he learnt about the gang’s movement. Police erected a barricadin­g and arrested the five accused who were travelling in the SUV from near Bajuha village in the district.

The Jalandhar SSP said that these persons were also convicted in snatching cases and they were out on parole.

A case under Sections 392 (robbery), 395 (dacoity), 402 (assembling for purpose of committing dacoity), 482 (punishment for using a false property mark) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 25 of the Arms Act was registered at the Sadar Nakodar station.

In another case, the police arrested one Nitin Arora (25) of Mohalla Ashok Nagar in Jalandhar from Panj Peer turning point for carrying a pistol and cartridges.

A case under Section 25 of the Arms Act was registered against him.
