LOCKDOWN CHECKLIST
Across continents, there's agreement: medics, police, utility workers, food production and communications are exempt from lockdowns. But here's a list of some other interesting activities and preferences that have also been exempted
GUNS, GOLF AND POT IN AMERICA
■ Several US states where marijuana is legal, such as California and Washington, deemed pot shops as essential services. The emphasis though has been on the drug's medicinal uses
■ In states like Pennsylvania, gun shops have been allowed to stay open, but only by appointment during limited hours if customers and employees comply with social distancing and other protective measures
■ Some lobbyists have been trying to influence what gets on lists of essential services, so their clients' businesses can remain open. As a result of their efforts, Arizona and Phoenix included golf courses on the list
BOOZY BRITAIN
After reports of supermarkets
■ running out of beer, wine and spirits, the government quickly added liquour stores to the list of essentials
■ While restaurants and eateries must be shut, people can still get the typically British fish and chips and other meals, only if they go for take-out
FRENCH CHEESE AND WINE
True to the well-recognised French spirit, in France, shops specialising in pastry, wine and cheese have been declared essential businesses
ISRAELI PRAYERS ANSWERED
■ In a nod to Israel’s vibrant religious life, people can gather for outdoor prayers - with a maximum of 10 worshipers standing 2 metres apart
■ Demonstrations - also allowed - are occurring outside parliament and the Supreme Court, with participants maintaining social distance
