Two terrorists were killed in a gunbattle with security forces at Waghama in Jammu & Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Tuesday, four days after they fired at a CRPF patrol and left a trooper and an 8-year-old boy dead, a top police officer said.
SRINAGAR/JAMMU: Two militants, allegedly involved in the killings of a CRPF man and a minor boy, were killed in an encounter with security forces in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Tuesday, officials said.
A joint cordon and search operation was launched by the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the army’s 3-Rashtriya Rifles and CRPF after getting specific information about presence of militants in Anantnag’s Waghama village.
“During the search operation, the terrorists were given an opportunity to surrender. However, they fired indiscriminately upon the search party, leading to an encounter,” a police spokesman said.
“Two unidentified terrorists were killed and their bodies were retrieved from the encounter site. The identification and affiliation of the slain terrorists is being ascertained,” he added.
The spokesman said some incriminating materials, including arms and ammunition, were also recovered from the encounter site. The bodies of the slain militants have been sent to north Kashmir’s Handwara for last rites after conducting medico-legal formalities including collection of their DNA. “In case any family claims the killed terrorists to be their kith or kin, they can come forward for their identification and participation in last rites at Handwara,” he said.
Kashmir inspector general of police, Vijay Kumar, said both the slain militants along with another terrorist Zahid were involved in killing of a policeman last year and that of two CRPF personnel and a minor boy recently. After the attack, police had identified and released the picture of Zahid Daas and registered an FIR.
Kumar said he appreciates the forces for exercising ‘utmost restraint’, thereby ensuring a ‘clean operation’ with no collateral damage.
128 TERRORISTS ELIMINATED TILL JUNE, LAUNCH PADS ACROSS LOC ACTIVE: DGP
Jammu and Kashmir director general of police (DGP) Dilbag Singh said the anti-terror operations continue in Kashmir and till date 128 terrorists have been eliminated by the security forces. The DGP was in Poonch to review the security scenario along the LoC and in the hinterland.
“Our anti-infiltration grid is intact on the border and in the hinterland but at the same time terror launch pads of Pakistan are also active and keep trying to push terrorists to this side. Our security forces have foiled their sinister designs and will keep doing so,” he told reporters.
“In Kashmir region, our antiterror operations have been going on and this month alone 48 terrorists have been eliminated. Till June, the security forces have eliminated 128 terrorists, out of which 70 belonged to Hizbul Mujahideen, 20 each from Jaish-e-Mohammad and Lashkar-e-Toiba and remaining from other terror oufits,” the DGP said.
