8 deaths, 227 fresh infections in J&K

SRINAGAR:: Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday recorded eight deaths and 227 fresh Covid-19 infections, taking the total number of cases in the Union territory to 8,246, officials said.

Of the new cases, 197 are from Kashmir and 30 from Jammu division. Among these, 29 patients have a travel history.

Eight more people have succumbed to the virus in Kashmir. With this, the death toll in the UT has reached 127—113 fatalities in Kashmir and 14 in Jammu division.

The Union territory, particular­ly Kashmir valley, is witnessing an increase in death toll from the past few days due to the disease. Two days ago, 12 deaths, which is the highest since the first few cases were reported on March 9, were reported in J&K.

Dr Naveed Shah, head of chest medicine at Government Medical College in Srinagar, is worried about the deteriorat­ing situation in the Valley. “Where are we heading to, deaths (are) increasing, severe cases (are) coming. Can it be an indicator of the actual no of cases in the community?” he said.

Active cases in the UT stand at 2,976 after 20 people were discharged in Jammu division and 48 in Kashmir. So far, 5,143 people have been cured in the UT, taking the recovery rate to 62.36 %. Of the total recovered, 3,869 are in Kashmir while 1,274 in Jammu division.

In Kashmir, the highest jump in positive cases was witnessed in Baramulla district where 57 more people have got infected, followed by Shopian at 46 and Srinagar at 33. In Jammu division, the highest of 12 cases were reported in Jammu district followed by 10 in Samba.

Till date, 2.93 lakh people have been enlisted for observatio­n — 40,409 in home quarantine, 43 in hospital quarantine and 44,693 under home surveillan­ce. Besides these, 2.05 lakh people have completed their 28-day surveillan­ce period.
