14 deaths, 353 fresh infections in J&K

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir on Friday recorded 14 deaths and 353 fresh Covid-19 infections, taking the total number of positive cases in the Union territory to 16,782, officials said.

Of the new cases, 129 are from Jammu region and 224 from Kashmir, officials said.

Fourteen more patients have succumbed to the virus—13 in Kashmir and one in Jammu. With this, the death toll has risen to 296. Of the total fatalities recorded so far, 275 are from the Valley and 21 from the Jammu region, officials said.

Also, 508 more patients have been cured. There are now 7,269 active cases in the UT. The number of people who have recovered since the first cases emerged on March 9 has reached 9,217, taking the recovery rate to 55%. From 63% on July 1, the recovery rate has consistent­ly gone down till July 17 with increase in new cases as compared to the number of people cured.

The cases detected on Friday include 48 people who have recently returned to Jammu and Kashmir. The officials said Kulgam district in south Kashmir recorded the highest of 83 new positive cases, followed by 59 in Shopian, 36 in Bandipore and 35 in Srinagar district.

The Jammu and Kashmir administra­tion has imposed a lockdown in nine of 10 districts that are red zones.

Till date, 3.47 lakh people have been enlisted for observatio­n — 42,781 in home quarantine, 7,659 in hospital isolation, 12 in hospital quarantine and 40,019 under home surveillan­ce.
