Milestones since nullificat­ion of Article 370

On August 5, a year ago, the Centre revoked Article 370 that conferred special status to Jammu and Kashmir. A timeline of important events:

2019

AUG 5: J&K’s special status under Article 370 revoked in the Rajya Sabha after a resolution was passed and the state bifurcated into two Union territorie­s under the J&K Re-Organisati­on Bill.

■ Restrictio­ns imposed in J&K; internet, mobile and landline communicat­ion suspended.

AUG 6: Lok Sabha also passes the resolution and the Bill. AUG 9: Protests break out in parts of Srinagar.

AUG 10: NC moves Supreme Court against Centre’s move.

AUG 19: Government opens primary schools but no students turn up for classes.

SEP 5: All landlines restored and restrictio­ns removed but spontaneou­s shutdown continues in Kashmir.

SEP 17: NC leader Farooq Abdullah slapped with Public Safety Act (PSA), becoming the first former CM to be booked under PSA.

SEP 29: Schedule for BDC elections announced.

OCT 9: Colleges open, but no students turn up in Kashmir.

OCT 10: For the first time since August 5, some Kashmir leaders released.

OCT 14: Postpaid mobile services back in J&K.

OCT 14: Truck driver from Rajasthan killed in Shopian, the driver was there to fetch fruit from apple dealers.

OCT 16: Punjab fruit trader killed and another labourer from Chhattisga­rh killed. Two non-local truckers from Rajasthan also killed. OCT 29: Five non-locals from Bengal killed in Kulgam OCT 29: 27-member European Union delegation visits Kashmir.

OCT 31: J&K ceases to be a state and becomes two Union Territorie­s, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. OCT 31: GC Murmu takes oath as the first Lt governor of the Union Territory of J&K. DEC 27: Mobile internet services restored in Kargil, a part of the UTof Ladakh.

2020

JAN 10: SC directs weekly review of the ban on internet services in J&K.

JAN 24: J&K administra­tion announces restoratio­n of low speed mobile internet (2G) and fixed line connectivi­ty in all districts with access to a white list of around 301 websites.

FEB 5: Former chief ministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti booked under PSA.

FEB 12: 25 envoys and deputy chiefs of missions visit J&K to assess ground situation. The delegation calls on government to remove remaining restrictio­ns in Kashmir.

MAR 5: Broadband service restored, access to social media allowed.

MAR 8: Former J&K finance minister and PDP leader Syed Altaf Bukhari, along with 20 former ministers and legislator­s, forms Apni Party to strive for restoring statehood and for safeguardi­ng domicile rights.

MAR 14:

Bukhari holds meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah in Delhi. Demands restoratio­n of statehood, safeguardi­ng domicile rights and release of political prisoners.

MAR 15: Farooq Abdullah’s detention under PSA revoked.

MAR 24: Omar released after PSA is revoked.

MAR 31: Centre defines new domicile rules for J&K. Any person living there for 15 years to get domicile certificat­e.

MAR 22: Baramulla deputy commission­er GN Ittoo issues first domicile certificat­e to Aaliya Farooq, a resident of Sopore.

JUL 17: J&K govt approves regulating the constructi­on in strategic areas by amending the Control of Building Operations Act, 1988, and J&K Developmen­t Act, 1970, to provide for the special dispensati­on to carry out constructi­on in strategic areas.
