‘We won’t be cowed down by such attacks’

-

After unabated attacks on BJP workers and leaders in the Valley, former member of the legislative council and Bharatiya Janata Party (Kashmir) vice-president Sofi Yusuf says the government is planning to secure party workers and leaders by moving them to safe zones. Speaking to HT’s Mir

Ehsan, he ruled out the possibility of arranging security for every person affiliated with the party.

Why are BJP workers being targeted in Kashmir?

After revocation of Article 370, only BJP workers and leaders are politically active. Many panches, sarpanches and block development council members (BDC) are affiliated with us. The party’s footprint has increased in Kashmir and many people, especially those in Pakistan, don’t like that, which is why our workers are being deliberately targeted.

How many have resigned?

Workers are worried, especially those living in farflung areas, but dedicated workers of the party will keep on working despite the threats. So far 10 or 11 people have resigned from the party.

Is the government providing security to your leaders?

Yes, many leaders have been provided security. However, at the same time security can’t be given to every leader or worker. The government is now working on a plan and separate zones will be formed for BJP workers in every district where they will remain secure and also work also for the people.

Do you think these attacks will prevent people from joining the party ?

To some extent yes, but still there are people who believe in the BJP are ready to join us because we are the only active party and our members offered help during lockdown at all places.
