MUSLIM MAN CONVERTS TO HINDUISM BEFORE MARRIAGE

-

A Muslim man, who converted to Hinduism before marriage and was under police protection with his Hindu wife for nearly a week, has now shifted to some other location, police said on Tuesday.

Haryana home minister Anil Vij had said last week that the state government has set up a three-member committee to draft a law against ‘love jihad’, a term used by BJP leaders to describe religious conversions in the guise of marriage.

In his early 20s, the man, who has also changed his name, married the 19-year-old woman in the second week of November following Hindu rituals, Yamunanagar superintendent of police Kamaldeep Goyal said, adding that they were provided protection after they approached the Punjab and Haryana high court.

The couple had approached the high court stating that they feared a threat to their lives and personal liberty from the woman’s family, while submitting that opposition to their marriage was a serious abuse of their rights provided under Article 21 of the Constitution.

The police later lodged the duo in a protection home here for several days, while acting on the high court’s directive to evaluate the threat perception and provide them security.

Chappar police station in-charge sub-inspector Bal Raj said, “The girl’s family had filed a complaint on November 9 that the man had taken away their daughter for marriage. The couple got married and moved the court after which they were provided security on November 20.”

“However, on November 26, the couple said they don’t need security anymore and have shifted to some other location. Now, their families have no problem with their marriage. The girl’s family has also withdrawn the FIR,” Raj said.
