100 DAYS OF MAYHEM

-

Protesters rallied across Myanmar on Tuesday to denounce its military rulers, 100 days after the junta overthrew Aung San Kuu Kyi’s elected government. Demonstrators took part in marches, motorcycle convoys and flash protests. Here’s a recap of the events that have rocked the nation since the February 1 coup

The junta staged a coup on February 1, arresting civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi and her allies in pre-dawn raids. Suu Kyi was charged with unlawfully possessing walkie-talkies

2 ACCESS DENIED

Resistance to the coup began with people banging pots and pans. The junta tried to block Facebook and other social media platforms. Nightly internet blackouts were imposed

3 PEOPLE RISE UP

Dissent started to surge from February 6. Tens of thousands of people took to the streets, calling for Suu Kyi’s release. Workers launched a nationwide strike on February 8

4 JUNTA SANCTIONED

Next day, the US slapped sanctions on the junta and its leader Min Aung Hlaing. In retaliation, Suu Kyi was hit with a fresh charge: violation of a natural disaster management law

5 FIRST DEATH

Mya Thwate Thwate Khaing, a woman protester shot by cops 10 days earlier, died on February 19. Suu Kyi, meanwhile, was hit with more charges. She was also accused of taking bribes in cash and gold

6 BLOODIEST DAY

March 27 turned into a bloodbath with over 100 civilians killed in crackdowns. Days later, Suu Kyi was again slapped with a charge: breaching the official secrets act.
