Jats threaten to relaunch agitation
They say govt’s decision to award 10% reservation to five communities is an eyewash
ROHTAK: Giving an ultimatum to the Haryana government, Akhil Bharitya Jat Arakshan Sangharsh Samiti (ABJASS) on Saturday threatened to relaunch its agitation if the government failed to make constitutional provision for 10% quota for the community in government jobs in the monsoon session of Parliament.
The decision was taken in a samiti meeting at grain market, Sonepat, which was attended by members of khap panchayats.
National president of ABJASS, Yaspal Malik, said, “The announcement of 10% quota to Haryana Jats by state government was mere an eyewash as the community members are still not getting the benefit.”
“We demand that the government should add 10% reservation to Jats under the OBC category by making an amendment to the Constitution on the lines of Tamil Nadu,” he said.
He said that the state government needed to award constitutional status to Jat quota, making the members of community eligible for benefits in central jobs as well.
On the feasibility of quota for Jats at the central level, he said: “If Tamil Nadu can get it done by bringing amendment in the Constitution, why Haryana government is dragging its feet over the issue?”
Rajender Khatri, pardhan of 360-khap, who presided over the meeting on Saturday, said: “We want that police cases registered against Jat leaders between 2010 and 2013 are withdrawn.” ABJASS urged the representatives of the khap panchayats to mobilise support for the agitation.
Addressing the gathering, Yashal Malik said, “130 Parliamentarians are elected from Jat- dominated areas in the country and our group will ensure that they all push for amendment in the Constitution for getting OBC status to the community.”
The executive of ABJASS would meet at Hisar on July 8 to chalk out a plan for the relaunch of agitation.
In December last year, the Haryana government had agreed to give 10% quota in government jobs to five communities — Jats, Jat Sikhs, Bishnois, Rors and Tyagis — following prolonged agitation by khap panchayats across the state.
