NEW DELHI: A first-year medical student at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences ( AIIMS) was found hanging in her hostel room early on Sunday morning.

Khushboo Choudhary (17), a native of Bikaner in Rajasthan had joined the institute just a month ago. She had stood 24th in the all India entrance test for the institute.

An investigating of ficer said, “Khushboo was alone in the room because her roommate had gone on leave for Rakshabandan. There are no external injury marks on the body of the deceased and so post mortem report will help us with the exact cause of death. We checked the whole room but did not find a suicide note.”

However, AIIMS spokesperson Dr Amit Gupta said that their inquiry ruled out foul play or ragging. “The family was informed about the incident in the morning and would reach by the evening. We cannot do anything till the famib2ly is here. The post- mortem can be conducted only tomorrow ( Monday) b2 after the family gives permission.”

Meanwhile, Khushboo’s friends told the police that on Saturday evening she seemed happy and had also gone out for shopping with friends to Sarojini Nagar. They had returned to the hostel at around 11 pm.

Around midnight, she received a call on her cell phone after which she was disturbed, one of her friends told the police. She reportedly spoke on the phone for about 10-15 minutes outside the room and was later spotted texting. After the call, she asked everyone to go to their rooms, and wanted to be left alone as she was tired.

Later, one of her friends, who had reportedly left her mobile phone to charge in Khushboo’s room and went back to get it at 2.25 am, found Khushboo hanging from the fan and immediately alerted her friends and AIIMS authorities. She was rushed to the emergency room at AIIMS where she was declared brought dead. Police were then informed of the incident. They seized Khushboo’s mobile phone and are scanning it for more information. They also confirmed that phone records showed she spoke to two friends at around midnight.
