Reservation issue
After Independence a provision was made in the Constitution to give reservation to the downtrodden castes for 10 years. But the practice continues and now the others are also demanding reservation. The time and situation demand that the reservation should be abolished for all and the selection should be purely on merit.

Opposing caste-based reservation, the Patel agitation is a welcome move. It has arrived at the right time to articulate the aspirations of people. The Patel youth are rightly demanding quota for the economically weak irrespective of caste or creed. Right-thinking people should be united on quota to the economically weak and extend their support to the movement.

Shedding crocodile tears
It’s strange that Punjab Congress chief Partap Singh Bajwa has sought the President’s intervention in the one rank one pension (OROP) scheme. Why did he not raise the issue when the UPA government was in power? The denial of OROP has been a great insult to those who saved the country by their sacrifices.

Changing name of road
The Delhi government has changed the name of Aurangzeb Road to APJ Abdul Kalam Road. Sikhs of Delhi had been demanding that the road be named after Guru Teg Bahadur. The reason given for not doing so was that the names of roads with historical names would not be changed but it was suddenly changed. Another road could have been named after the former President.
