KARNAL: IPS officer Bharti Arora, who has been appointed by the BJP government in Haryana to supervise police teams constituted to check slaughter and smuggling of cows, on Monday said that cow smuggling and slaughtering was linked with terrorism.

“It is an organised crime and the money from cow slaughtering is being used to spread terrorism in India,” Bharti said, while talking to mediapersons after holding a meeting of district police officials regarding implementation of Haryana Gauvansh Sanrakshan and Gausamvardhan Act 2015.

Without providing any information about the people behind this organised crime, she said, “Cows are being smuggled from India to Bangladesh via Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. Several groups are working behind this and crores of rupees obtained from smuggling of cows are being used to kill people and spread terrorism in India.”

“As per our law, cow slaughtering and smuggling should be stopped. It is our duty to prevent people from taking law into their hands,” she added.

Asked why the number of cases of violence with cow smugglers and traders has increased in the past few months, she said, “We are working over the issue and identity cards will be issued to the genuine ‘gau rakshaks’ after police verification, but they will not be allowed to indulge into violence.”

Bhani Ram Mangla, president of Haryana Gau Sewa Ayog who was also present in the meeting said, “There are about 1.20 lakh stray animals in the state. Now, the government will start tagging system for the cattle, even those kept in dairy farms. This will help keep an eye over dairy farmers, who abandon the cattle after they fail to produce milk.”

He said the Ayog will provide the identity cards for ‘gau rakshaks’ after complete verification and interested candidates can apply for it.
