CENTRE WRITES TO CJI OVER PENDING ADOPTION CASES
NEW DELHI: Concerned over a large number of adoption cases pending in courts across the country, the Centre has written to Chief Justice of India on the need to sensitise judges. Maneka Gandhi-led women and child development ministry has also suggested a slew of measures in order to hasten the legal process. “Courts are going beyond the scope of Juvenile Justice Act and have imposed several conditions which are not in the best interest of the children and adoptive parents,” says the letter to CJI J S Khehar. The letter was referring to several controversial orders in the recent past.
India clears ₹17,000crore mega missile deal with Israel
NEW DELHI: A ₹17,000-crore deal has been cleared by the government for jointly developing with Israel a medium-range surfaceto-air missile (MR-SAM) for the army, reflecting India’s fast growing defence ties with the Jewish nation. The project will be implemented by the DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) and and Israeli Aircraft Industry (IAI).
Anticipatory bail for Roopa Ganguly in assault case
KOLKATA: The Calcutta high court on Friday granted anticipatory bail to BJP MP and actress Roopa Ganguly in connection with a case of alleged assault in South 24-Parganas district. A division bench comprising Justices Nadira Patheriya and Shiva Kant Prasad granted the relief to Ganguly, a Rajya Sabha member, on two surety bonds of ₹5,000.
Demand for ban on TV programme ‘Fateh ka Fatwa’
BAREILLY: Terming the arguments of Islamic scholar Tarek Fatah as “un-Islamic”, a Muslim organisation here announced a reward of ₹10 lakh to anyone who beheads him. It has also demanded an immediate ban on ‘Fateh ka Fatwa’, a TV show hosted by Fatah. “Tarek Fatah is conspiring to disrupt harmony between Hindus and Muslims. He must be stopped at any cost and our organisation will pay ₹10,00,786 to the person who will decapitate him,” said Moeen Siddique, head of All-India Faisan-e-Madina Council.
Judicial restraint needed for permitting settlements: SC
NEW DELHI: Judicial restraint should be observed by the courts while permitting settlement between parties on criminal offences which are barred under the Code of Criminal Procedure, the SC has said. “We are of the considered opinion that encroaching into the right of the other organ of the government would be tantamount clear violation of the rule of law...” a bench said.
Four TN fishermen attacked allegedly by Sri Lankans
RAMESWARAM: Four Tamil Nadu fishermen suffered serious injuries after they were attacked, allegedly by Sri Lankan fishermen, near Kodiyakarai off the island nation. The Sri Lankan fishermen first threatened them with hand guns and attacked them with sharp weapons, Pamban Country Boat Association leader S Arul said. “Their fishing nets and equipment, cell phones and walkie talkies were also taken away,” he said.
Woman burnt for resisting rape by hubby’s relative
KORBA: A 30-year-old woman died after she was set on fire allegedly by her husband’s relative for resisting rape in Korba district, police said on Friday. The incident occurred last morning in, when Ramesh Patel (25), a cousin of the victim’s husband, tried to force himself upon her when nobody was present at home, said the Urga police station SHO MM Minj. However, as the woman fought back, Patel thrashed her before dousing her in kerosene and setting her ablaze.
