68 police outposts, health staff along Chardham route

The Uttarakhan­d government is gearing up for this year’s Chardham Yatra which is set to begin on April 28.

Police and health officials are deploying staff all along the Yatra route. The Yatra will begin with the opening of the portals of Gangotri and Yamunotri shrines in Uttarkashi district on April 28, followed by those of Kedarnath in Rudrapraya­g and Badrinath in Chamoli district on May 3 and May 6, respective­ly. All the four holy shrines are located in Garhwal hills of the state.

Sixty-eight temporary police outposts will be set up for the Yatra period in the Garhwal range, which already has around 80 police stations and 141 police outposts.

The health department plans to deploy over 100 doctors on the pilgrimage route on a rotational basis. “At least 12 temporary health centres or medical relief posts will be set up along the Kedarnath trekking route,” a senior health official said.

This time, the state’s tourism department plans to make alcohol tests mandatory for all the pilgrims during the pilgrimage.
