ALIGARH: The latest to offer her views on the ongoing debate on triple talaq is the wife of Vice-President Hamid Ansari, Salma Ansari. “Just uttering talaq thrice does not make for valid divorce under Islam,” she said here on Sunday.

She also asked Muslim women to read the Quran properly instead of relying on clerics.

“Pronouncement of talaq thrice is meaningless. Women usually read Quran in Arabic and do not read its translation. As a result, most are ignorant about the contents and provisions mentioned in it. Nowhere in the Quran is it stipulated that talaq can be pronounced thrice in one sitting. However, as women are ignorant of the interpretation of Quranic texts, they approach maulanas and maulvis and simply believe whatever they say,” she said in reply to a question on the practice of triple talaq.

Ansari asserted that the Quran was the most authentic source of information regarding Islam. “You must read the Quran, read the Hadiths. Just see what the Rasool said,” she said

Women must have the courage to read the Quran by themselves and introspect on what’s written in it and gain knowledge about it, she said, emphasising that they should not blindly follow anyone. “Women can be easily misguided if they don’t read the Quran,” she said. A case on the validity of triple talaq is pending in the Supreme Court and the next hearing is due on May 11.
