Blaming DJs for violence in marriages, panchayat members of Mandi village of Panipat district have imposed a ban on playing of DJs in marriages in the village.

The decision was taken unanimously at a meeting of panchayat members and village elders.

The panchayat members even threatened to slap a hefty monetary fine of ₹51,000 if anybody breaks the panchayat diktat. The fine will also be charged from the owners of the DJs.

According to Sarpanch Jyoti Devi, the decision was taken to maintain peace and harmony in the village.

“DJs are the root cause of fights and scuffles during marriages,” the sarpanch said.

She also said that the sound of DJs disturb students and elders.

“Several incidents of scuffle between youths were reported in the village and most of these were due to DJs. Now, the panchayat has decided to ban it so that the youths could focus on studies," she added.

She said that the money recovered from the erring villagers will be spent on developmental works in the village.

Such extra-judicial diktats are common in Haryana. In 2012, the panchayat of Dyoda Kheri village of Kaithal district had also imposed a ban on DJs after a youth was shot dead in neighbouring Khurda village during the ghurchari ritual in a marriage.
