The Haryana Board Class 10 exam result on Monday brought in major disappointment for the state, not just for the goof-up by the board that left them red-faced, but also for the poor show by students. Almost half of the students failed to qualify in the exam, highlighting an abysmal standard of education in the state.

A subject-wise breakdown of the result shows that students fared poorly in all major subjects.

The worst performance was seen in science subject, in which, 1.13 lakh out of 3.15 lakh students failed to pass. Mathematics, English and social science too present a same picture with around 1 lakh students out of 3.15 lakh failing to make a cut in each of the three subjects.

With a pass percentage of only 43.5%, not even half of the students studying in government schools cleared the exam. Their peers in private schools performed a little better with 58% pass percentage, bringing the overall result just a little over the halfway-mark.

Interestingly, the results in languages such as Sanskrit (98%), Urdu (94%) and Punjabi (93.5%) were better than Hindi (90%), which is the most widely spoken and written language in Haryana.

Of 3.15 lakh who appeared in Hindi, over 30,000 failed to clear the exam.

Most of the students had opted for physical education (94%) and drawing (99%) as additional subjects, and did fairly well. The agrarian state also saw many students opting for subjects such as agriculture, animal husbandry and agri-paddy farming. The pass percentage in these subjects also remained at over 90%.

Meanwhile, like always, girl students (55%) outshined boys (47%) by around 8%.
