UNIFORM CIVIL CODE

-

Apropos May 23 story ‘Triple talaq undesirable: AIMPLB,’ sane senses seem to have prevailed upon some Muslim leaders. Talaq, which means just an oath in Arabic, had been rendered undesirable by the maulvis. A majority of Muslims don’t know that triple talaq at one go has no validity in the Quran. There are three waiting periods in between the utterance of talaq thrice, so that a reconciliation between husband and wife is feasible. But when persons such as Congress leader Kapil Sibal, arguing for the Muslim Personal Law Board, equate it with the Ram Mandir, and call it a matter of faith, the whole issue gets twisted. A uniform civil code for all needs to be implemented. PS Kaur, Amritsar
