The fugitive suspect in the murder of 23-year-old trainee engineer Anjali Rathour was arrested from Mainpuri, nearly 300km from Noida, on Friday.

Ashwani Yadav, a 24-year-old who studied with her at Lovely Professional University in Jalandhar, was on the run since Rathour’s father accused him of murdering his daughter.

The woman from Haryana’s Yamunanagar was shot dead at the parking lot of a multi-storey house in Noida’s Sector 62 on May 31.She worked for Lava, a mobile phone company, and lived in the building with her colleagues.

Surveillance camera pictures showed a man with a firearm chasing the woman and shooting her in the head at 6.34am. But the assailant couldn’t be identified from the grainy video.

Police pieced together clues after the Rathour family’s allegation and found Yadav, who lives in New Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar, called his college friend twice before she was killed. His phone number was found on the visitor’s diary at the main gate of the housing society. An FIR was registered against him.

But police couldn’t find Yadav, who is from Etawah in Uttar Pradesh, in his Lajpat Nagar home.

Police said Rathour joined the phone-maker after completing her BTech. Yadav found work at a cloth store in Lajpat Nagar after getting his BBA degree. The two were friends since 2012.
