Police form special task force to tackle gang rivalries in Gurgaon
A Special Task Force will be constituted by the Haryana Police in Gurgaon to deal with cases of gang rivalries, drugs and illegal weapons.
The STF will be operational by the end of June, said BS Sandhu, director general of police (DGP), Haryana, in Gurgaon on Friday.
Gurgaon has five to six criminal gangs and they are allegedly involved in land grabbing, extortion, betting and other crimes.
Although the police have been able to curb their activities to a large extent over the last two years, the city has been increasingly feeling the need for a specialised force that could tackle such entrenched gangs.
Interacting with the media in Gurgaon, Sandhu said the Gurgaon police will also have a helpline with two officers from the Northeast to handle crimes against people from those states. Sandhu is visiting districts across the state after he assumed charge as the top cop in April-end.
The DGP said the need for a dedicated helpline was felt as cases of violence against people from Northeast have increased in the city.
On May 14, a 26-year-old of woman from Gangtok, Sikkim, was allegedly gang-raped in a moving car by three unidentified men near Sukhrali village area.
Similarly, on May 23, a 25-year- old woman from Darjeeling has alleged that she was molested by an unknown person at Sohna Chowk and she faced issues when she tried to lodge a complaint with the police.
Speaking about the rise in the number of crimes against women in the city, Sandhu said a women safety action plan will be implemented in Haryana soon.
“We have identified spots and will deploy police officers in those areas to provide safety to women in the city,” he said.
When asked about a case in which three police officers were found involved in power theft by the Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitaran Nigam (DHBVN) officials, he said, “Officers will have to pay the penalty. We have zero-tolerance for such incidences.”
The power discom had slapped a fine of ₹1.22 lakh on the violators. The city police will also get more manpower as 15,000 constables will be recruited soon, the DGP said. The interview process for the recruitment started on Friday.
“We understand that there is a need to increase the number of personnel as the rate of crime is increasing by the day. A total of 4,500 constables will be joining duty by the end of the month. Of them, 1,000 will be women staff. As many as 450 sub-inspectors will be added to the Gurgaon police soon. Seventy-five of them will be women,” Sandhu said.
