In an apparent negligence of Batala police, a gangster, who was brought to Batala for hearing in a criminal case, was released by five car-borne occupants outside Guru Nanak Nagar on Monday. The miscreants threw black paint in the eyes of two constables before taking the accused away.

According to information, accused Harvinder Singh, a resident of Mameychack village under Kotli Surat Malhi police station, is a murder convict and was lodged in Hoshiarpur jail. He was brought to Batala civil courts for hearing in a case registered at Fatehgarh Churrian police station.

On Monday morning, two constables of Hoshiarpur police, Sunil Kumar and Vijay Kumar, brought Harvinder to Batala bus stand in a Punjab roadways bus. They boarded an auto-rickshaw from the stand for the court.

As the auto slowed down near a railway crossing on the Batala-Gurdaspur road, an i20 car forced the auto to stop. Two of the car occupants came out from the car and put black paint on the cops and took away Harvinder in the car.

The place of the incident is just one kilometer from SSP’s office and Civil Lines police station. Batala SSP Deepak Hilori said, “We have sounded red alert in the entire area. Special police teams have been deputed and picture of the accused was provided on all check posts and they will be nabbed soon.”

Meanwhile, the police are neither confirming nor denying involvement of Vicky Gounder gang in the incident but a senior official, on the condition of anonymity said, “We can’t rule out the possibility of involvement of the Vicky Gounder gang but right now, we are trying to locate the whereabouts of the accused and the jail inmate.”

Harvinder was arrested by the police in more than six criminal cases registered at Fatehgarh Churian and Kotli Surat Malhi police stations.

We have sounded alert in the area. Special police teams have been deputed and pictures of the accused have been sent to all checkposts. They will be nabbed soon. DEEPAK HILORI, Batala SSP
