FARIDKOT:The assistant registrar of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS), Faridkot, was suspended for allegedly leaking information to a doctor in Bathinda.

Surinder Kapoor, assistant registrar, had to face the heat after he allegedly provided information about purchases and appointments at the university to Dr Manit Jaura, a former assistant professor, oncology.

Dr Jaura had sought RTI information on purchases of defibrillators, operation theatre lights, operation theatre monitors for advanced cancer diagnostic centre at Bathinda, GGSMC, Faridkot, and civil hospitals at Lambi and Jalalabad.

“Dr Jaura had sought information under RTI Act from the university. I didn’t share any information with anyone as alleged. It was alleged that I drafted a cover letter that Dr Jaura sent to a minister. This is not true,” Kapoor said.

I was shown pages of a letter alleging that the content was sent from my e-mail to the doctor. I never sent any such mail to him. Moreover, if the authorities can hack my account, they can write a mail themselves using my account,” Kapoor claimed.

Last week, Dr Jaura held a press conference accusing the university authorities of doing illegal purchases and appointments of the officials.

Talking to Hindustan Times, Dr Jaura said that university should have replied to his 100 RTIs rather than suspending the official. “I even brought the matter in the notice of the chief minister through a letter.”

“It is a scam which needs to be exposed. The vice-chancellor had done wrong by suspending the assistant registrar.” Jaura added.

Vice-chancellor Dr Raj Bahdur said: “People who were shown the door by my predecessor for their alleged dubious acts are involved with some university officials. They want to tarnish university’s image. These officials have done serious criminal activities and are chargesheeted. They themselves had matured those purchases which they are now calling illegal.”

“The appointments are rectified by the board to the post for which the official has a grudge as he was rejected for the same. A very senior official on mere honorarium of ₹20,000 is giving 12 hours a day to the university and there is no illegal appointment here,” Dr Raj Bahdur added.
