NEED TO CURB EXPENDITURE ON MARRIAGES
The loan waiver announced by the Captain Amarinder Singhled Congress government for marginal farmers in the state is a welcome move. However, it is a temporary step which will benefit a small section only. First, the purpose of any loan must be established. Many poor farmers take loans from arhtiyas for their children’s marriages and they are unable to repay these due to astronomical interest rates. Then the loan gets double by the time the crop is sold in the market. And if the crop fails, the farmer resorts to suicide. The Punjab government should ban or at least curb expenditure on marriage.
