Waste segregation project receives lukewarm response
JALANDHAR Even though the Jalandhar municipal Corporation Jalandhar (MCJ) started waste segregation process one and a half months before it was launched by the Union urban development ministry on World Environment Day on June 5, the project has failed to take off in the city.
The civic body launched the project in the city on April 23 but so far, it has only been able to cover four out of 60 wards. The project is currently with practice in ward 55, 30, 5 and 6.
MC officials said only one ward (55) has so far covered 70% of the households while others are half-heartedly following the rule of keeping separate dustbins for biodegradable and nonbiodegradable wastes.
In the initial week, the MC also held community-level programmes to sensitise people on waste segregation but it yielded no results.
“After many community meetings, only a few have taken initiative of putting two dustbins,” said Dr Shri Kishan Sharma, health officer, MCJ.
“The MC is targeting to cover all the wards by December end,” he added.
Even after starting ₹30 crore sweeping machine project and purchasing cleanliness machinery worth ₹3.5 crore, managing waste still remains a challenge for the MC.
As part of the waste management process, the MC has put 500 dustbins in the city.
Waste management holds immense importance to the MC as city dump in Wariana village is now overflowing with the amount of garbage being dumped there daily.
