Torn pages of ‘gutka’ found scattered in canal

-

JALANDHAR Torn pages of a ‘gutka’ (Sikh scripture) were found scattered in a canal bridge and a distributary of Bist-Doab canal in Sher Singh Colony locality on Thursday.

Interestingly, it is the same place where torn pages of Guru Granth Sahib and Bhagavad Gita were recovered on September 24, 2016.

Following the incident on Thursday, Sikh activists blocked the Kapurthala Chowk for two days in protest against the police.

An eyewitness Davinder of Raj Nagar, Basti Bawa Khel, told HT that he saw two youths on a bike throw torn pages of the ‘gutka’ at the place and fleeing.

As the news of the incident spread, Sikhs of nearby localities and activists gathered there and collected the pages. Some of them went inside the canal and recovered the pages.

After getting information, deputy commissioners of police (DCPs) Rajinder Singh, Gurmeet Singh and others rushed to the spot to pacify the situation.

Presently, heavy police force has been deployed in the area to prevent any untoward incident. The locals demanded that perpetrators behind the incident be arrested at the earliest.

DCP Rajinder Singh told HT that police have been trying to zero in on the bike-borne youths and scanning of CCTV footages was on.
