Shiromani Akali Dal workers on Sunday blocked the Sardulgarh–Sirsa road to protest the death of a man who was sent to the Mansa jail for smuggling liquor. Led by RS MP Balwinder Singh Bhunder, they alleged that Darshan Singh of Sardulgarh had died of police beating.

BATALA :First it was a mini truck laden with fruit, and now it’s one carrying vegetables.

In the past one week, robbers have struck on the Amritsar-Pathankot national highway twice and taken away mini trucks forcibly.

Mahinder Kumar of Pathankot told the police that he was transporting vegetables to Amritsar, when another truck waylaid him near Naushera Majha Singh village near Batala in the wee hours of Sunday.

The truck’s four occupants allegedly overpowered him and snatched the keys of his mini truck. They then took him along towards Amritsar and threw him out near Jaintupur village before speeding away.

This was the second such incident on this stretch within a week.

Highway robbers had fled with a mini truck carrying fruit on June 20.

Police have failed to make any breakthrough yet in the two cases.

Investigating officer Manohar Lal of the Sadar police station said his team was probing the cases from various angles and will be able to send the gang of robbers behind bars soon.
