MUSLIMS AS MINORITY

-

The editorial, ‘Muslims are not the only minority groups in India (HT, June 28)’, has brought to focus the significance of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) demand asking for not only abolishing the minority commission but also the minority affairs ministry. In this regard, the statement of former prime minister Manmohan Singh at a National Development Council meeting must be recalled. He said, “Minorities, especially Muslims, must have first claim on resources of the country.” This statement had created division in society, causing hurt among sections of society. The VHP has only felt this hurt and voiced its sentiments. The VHP demand needs to be considered in view of posturing of parties, apparently just to create a vote bank, and not in the context of any hatred against any community.
