Finally the monsoon has hit Delhi-NCR, the MeT department said on Sunday. Even as the city had seen overcast conditions and rain in the past few days and record rainfall in a decade this June, it wasn’t monsoon. The official date for arrival of the monsoon in Delhi is June 29. On Sunday morning, however, MeT declared that the monsoon has hit Delhi.

NEW DELHI: The monsoon has finally arrived in the National Capital region, the Met department said on Sunday.

The city has witnessed overcast conditions and an abundance of rain fall in the last few days — making June the wettest month in a decade.

However, if weather experts were to be believed the showers were not due to Monsoon, which was supposed to hit the Capital on June 29.

On Sunday morning, however, MeT officials declared that the rainy season had officially hit Delhi.

The MeT office said that the “southwest monsoon had further advanced into some more parts of Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh, remaining parts of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, entire National Capital region NCR (Delhi) and some parts of Haryana.”

Till 8.30am on Sunday, around 20.4mm of rainfall was recorded. The city received another 4.2mm of rainfall during the day till 5.30pm. Humidity levels oscillated between 79% and 98%.

The maximum temperature on Sunday was 32 degrees Celsius, five notches below normal, while the minimum temperature was 26.4 degrees Celsius, a point below normal.

According to a Met official, a western disturbance will ensure more rainfall in Delhi for two more days.

“On Monday, the city will witness generally cloudy skies with light rains or thundershowers likely to occur towards the morning. The maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 33 and 26 degree Celsius respectively,” he said.

“The monsoon arrived in east UP on Saturday. Today, it arrived in west UP and Delhi NCR. For the next two days, this rain will continue due to a western disturbance. After that, there are forecasts of light rain,” the official said.

This year, monsoon in Delhi has arrived a few days late. Sometimes, Met officials said, the monsoon current is strong enough and advances on its own.

But at times it needs some “push” or a “drag” to advance over the Indian landmass. Certain atmospheric conditions, such as a cyclonic circulation, a low pressure or a depression in the sea provides this push.

The overnight rainfall, however, brought with it its usual share of problems, with waterlogging being reported from some areas in south Delhi on Sunday. According to traffic police, waterlogging was witnessed at Mehrauli Badarpur Road, Apollo flyover, Jasola and Kasturba Gandhi Marg on Sunday. A tree fell at Mathura Road.

However, being a Sunday with minimal vehicular movement compared to weekdays, not many traffic snarls were reported.

In June this year, the New Delhi area (Safdarjung observatory) has received 191.9 mm of rain, breaking a 10-year-old record of 150.9 mm rain in June 2007. In June 2013, Delhi had received around 119.5 mm of rain. The wettest June Delhi has ever witnessed was in 1936 when the city received around 414.8 mm of rain.
