Husband and other members of the family of a woman allegedly ‘killed’ a female foetus by repeatedly kicking the womb of the woman at a village in Abohar on Saturday night to get rid of the birth of a second girl in the family. The victim is lying in a hospital here while the accused, booked for the crime, are at large.

Brahmdev, a native of Jhandwala Hanuwanta village in Abohar, told the police, said that he married his daughter Suman to Davinder, a resident of Banwala village in Sriganganagar in Rajasthan five years ago.

“After marriage, my daughter became pregnant, but her husband and his family made her undergo a sex-determination test and got the pregnancy aborted against her wishes as it was a female foetus in her womb,” he alleged.

“After some months, she conceived again and later gave a birth to a female child, who is now two-and-a-half years’ old, the father of the woman said.

“Five months ago, Suman again conceived and when her husband and other family members came to know about the ‘female foetus’ they started torturing her,” he said.

On Saturday night, in an attempt to save herself from the severe torture at the hands of her in-laws, she left her home to reach their house in Abohar, said her father. “But, when she reached Acchadiki village, situated near their village, her husband and other members of the family arrived there and caught her near the village bus stand and started kicking madly in the womb,” alleged father of the victim, adding that her in-laws were mad to have a male child.

“Hearing her screams, some people came to her rescue and her husband and others fled from the site,” he said. The people then informed us about the incident.

“We reached the spot and we took Suman to the local civil hospital where doctors, after a great struggle, saved her life, but could not save the female foetus in her womb,” he said.

On the basis of the statement of the victim, a case was registered against her husband Davinder, father-in-law Ranjit, mother-in-law Bimla under sections 316 (causing death of unborn child by act amounting to culpable homicide), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the IPC at the Khukhian Servor police station.

A three-member team of medico experts’ team conducted the postmortem of foetus, the police said. The accused are at large.
