Deputy inspector general of police DIG (jails) Surinder Singh Saini along with a police team conducted the search on the premises in the early hours of Sunday. As per information, Saini along with the jail staff and police teams from the Amritsar commissionerate started the search at around 4 am in the morning and the entire search operation continued for five hours.

The police teams checked all the barracks, kitchen area, de-addiction centre and other premises. The police found 24 mobile phones, chargers, batteries and around ₹ 5,300 cash.

Saini said, “The search operation was done after taking due precautions. We will get cases registered against all the guilty jail inmates.” The police official stressed that a probe will be conducted to find out that how these mobiles were sneaked inside the jail and also that contacts were made to which numbers through the mobiles. He asked the jail staff to stay vigilant and ensure total strictness is maintained.

Saini said that the vigil has been enhanced in the jail to ensure that such things are not smuggled inside the jail.

Notably, recovery of mobile phones is a regular affair at Amritsar Central Jail.

It is learnt that in the past seven to eight months nearly 300 mobile phones have been recovered from the jail inmates by authorities.
