Will have to probe if gangrape survivor was attacked: Yogi

-

LUCKNOW: Chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday expressed doubts over the alleged acid attack on a gang rape victim in Lucknow, saying “it needs to be seen if actually an attack happened”.

The CM’s comments came a day after the woman claimed she was attacked with acid by two unidentified persons at her hostel in Aliganj area. “It needs to be seen if actually an attack happened. Investigations are on. I think we will soon know if the attack happened or not,” Yogi told a private news channel in Varanasi.

“This turns out to be the sixth acid attack on the woman. I had visited her at the KGMU (in March) and then we made arrangements for her treatment and security. She was kept in a secure place under police protection,” he said. “Law is for protection of people, but if someone misuses it for whatever reasons or to victimise someone, then we will act against such people too,” he added. Police said the woman suffered injuries on the right side of her face and shoulder and is undergoing treatment at the trauma centre of the King George’s Medical University.

Sandeep Singh, an armed constable deployed for her security, was in the waiting hall of the hostel when the incident occurred.

The woman, a mother of two, is pursuing court cases against two men who had allegedly gang raped her in 2008.
