AMRITSAR: Amritsar MP Gurjit Singh Aujla stepped forward to safeguard the future of teachers and students of Khalsa College for Women and Khalsa College of Education, which have been de-affiliated by Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU).

After the Khalsa University was scrapped by the state government, it has left the significant stakeholders — students and teachers — of many colleges associated with it in a lurch. The colleges are currently not affiliated to any university.

This has caused a dip in the admissions at the two colleges, and has become a cause of worry for the teachers. Addressing the concern, MP Aujla met with GNDU vice-chancellor (V-C) SK Sandhu and registrar Prof KS Khalon. He appealed to them to re-affiliate the colleges under GNDU.

“The University authorities had earlier said that the Khalsa College Governing Council (KCGC) should give them in writing about the de-affiliation of the said colleges from their non-existing Khalsa University,” said Aujla. “I have told them that as the university does not exist anymore, they should go ahead and affiliate these colleges within a few days and it will be done soon,” assured Aujla.

The move of the Khalsa College Governing Counci management of disaffiliating two prominent colleges from Guru Nanak Dev University in the past had not made the teachers vocal about the Khalsa University issue.

It has also made them come together to back Congress’ decision as they do not want Khalsa College to get heritage status.

This disaffiliation has been opposed by teachers as by they have been associated to KU.

And the decision will take away their aided posts ( sanctioned) transferred to KU from Guru Nanak Dev University.

They said that it doesn’t only go against the spirit of the agreement but also is in contravention of the rules and regulations of the state government’s department of higher education.

“The chief minister has asked me to look after the teachers and students and make sure that their future is safeguarded. This is people’s issue and nothing can be a hindrance in resolving this. We are finding an amicable solution that will come in light in few days,” he said.

Aujla added that Khalsa College for Women has been catering to girls from the rural areas. He visited the college, where he interacted with teachers and students, took note of their concerns and pacified them.

Students who are to pass out from the college are worried that their degrees will be from a nonexisting university.
