MAYA’S RESIGNATION FROM RS ACCEPTED

- Agencies letters@hindustantimes.com

NEW DELHI: BSP chief Mayawati’s resignation from the Rajya Sabha was accepted on Thursday by chairman Hamid Ansari, a senior official of the Upper House said.

She had to give a fresh oneline letter as is required under the rules after her earlier missive in three pages was considered a conditional offer which could not be accepted.

The format states that the resignation letter should be brief and should not mention the reasons.

Mayawati quit the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, hours after she was stopped by deputy chairman PJ Kurien from speaking beyond the stipulated time on the violence against Dalits in Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh.

Mayawati, whose six-year term was to end in April next year, said it served her no purpose to continue when she was not allowed to speak for the depressed sections of people whom she represents.

The move is seen as an attempt by Mayawati to consolidate her core Dalit support base and re-establish herself as the community’s eminent leader after facing a massive defeat in the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections earlier this year. Her party could win only 18 seats while the BJP came to power by winning more than 300 of the 403 seats.

The BJP had termed her resignation as a “drama” and pointed out that her tenure in the House was anyway coming to an end early next year.
