Institutes offering courses without mandatory sanction, GADVASU writes to govt
CHANDIGARH: Playing with the career of thousands of students, many private colleges and private universities in Punjab are running veterinary and animal sciences courses without taking the mandatory approval from Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana.
Alarmed at this brazen illegality, GADVASU has written to the state’s animal husbandry department stating that these institutes were duping students and seeking strict action against such institutes. “GADVASU does not recognise the veterinary and animal sciences courses that these colleges and private universities are offering. These institutes are duping students,” the letter says.
On the varsity’s list of courses and institutes that are indulging in this illegality are the Diploma in Animal Husbandry by Guru Kashi University in Talwandi Sabo; the four-year Bachelors of Fisheries Sciences at Dolphin College in Chunni Kalan, Fatehgarh Sahib; Bachelors of Sciences (Honours) in Fisheries at Desh Bhagat University in Mandi Gobindgarh and a Diploma in Fisheries by RIMT University in Fatehgarh Sahib district.
In addition, the list also includes eight more colleges, the websites of whic, are advertising the start of such courses, again without taking any approval or sanction from GADVASU.
“Courses offered by other colleges are illegal and against the government act. These colleges are misguiding the students and are putting their future in the dark,” GADVASU registrar Sushil Parbhakar told HT.
Apart from three colleges at its Ludhiana campus and its constituent college in Kaljharani of Bathinda, the only private institutes that the varsity has recognised the as competent to offer these courses are Khalsa College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Amritsar, and Baba Hira Dass Ji College of Veterinary Pharmacy, Badal village in Muktsar.
INSTITUTES ARE VIOLATING 2005 LAW
Sources said these courses are violating the rules established when GADVASU was established on July 29, 2005. The relevant law mentions, “On and from the date of establishment of the Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, no new college, imparting education in veterinary, animal and fisheries sciences, shall be established in the State of Punjab, except as a constituent or affiliated college of the university.” Govt mulls sending notices A senior official from the state veterinary department admitted that the matter of issuing notices to the colleges illegally running veterinary courses was under consideration. “The issue would be discussed at the level of the secretary,” an official said.
The issue was also discussed in the Board of Governance (BoG) meeting of GADVASU on July 13. It was then decided to write to the state government, seeking action.
