Five contract killers among seven arrested

JALANDHAR: The district rural police arrested seven criminals, including five contract killers, and seized illegal pistols and cartridges from them on Saturday.

The accused have been identified as Ramandeep Singh, 28, of Bullowal in Hoshiarpur; Harpreet Singh, 37, of Kapoor village; Mandeep Kumar, 29, of Kahna Dhesian; Anil Kumar, 23, of Talwan village; Jatinder Singh, 24 of Raiwal; Harpreet Singh Happy, 28, of Billi Chaharmi; and Arunpreet Singh, 22, of Rupewal village.

Accused Arunpreet has done a hotel management degree from Panjab University, Chandigarh. Happy was a kabaddi player and played for various foreign clubs.

Senior superinten­dent of police (SSP) Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, said, “Ramandeep is the kingpin of the contract killers’ gang, who along with his accomplice­s, had taken ₹40,000 as the first installmen­t under a deal. The deal was made by Harjinder Singh of Rajowal village to eliminate his brother Gurbhej Singh with whom he had a land dispute.”

The senior superinten­dent of police added, “Ramandeep had also settled a deal with Deepu, who wanted to kill his father-in-law Palwinder Singh of Jandu Singha village. But no money was stil paid under this deal.

The SSP said, “Ramandeep, Mandeep, and Harpreet have faced criminal cases in the past also. Anil and Jatinder have been arrested for the first time.”

He said, “The cops have seized five illegal pistols, 10 cartridges, seven gold earrings and four bikes from the accused.”

In a separate case, the rural police chief revealed that Nakodar police arrested Harpreet Singh Happy and Arunpreet Singh and recovered one pistol and five cartridges from their possession.

All the accused have been booked under various sections of the IPC and the Arms Act.

The senior superinten­dent of police said, “Harjinder and Deepu would also be arrested soon.”
