The local police, on Sunday, recovered school bags of Manpreet Kaur, 14, whose body was found floating in the Bist-Doab canal last Friday evening and her classmate Rupinderjeet Kaur, 14, who is still missing, outside an abandoned room in Kangna village of Balachaur subdivision.

The cops have also found neckties of both the girls kept in the bags.

The police have approached the district administration to talk to the canal department for stopping the supply of water in the Bist-Doab canal to help them in the operation on Monday morning to trace the missing girl.

Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Satinder Singh told Hindustan Times that divers would be called and a search operation would be carried out throughout the day.

On Sunday too, the senior superintendent of police (SSP), accompanied by a police team, including SP investigation Harinder Pal Singh; DSP, Nawanshahr, Mukhtiar Rai, DSP Balachaur Gagandeep Singh Bhullar, SHO, Balachaur, Harjinder Singh and more than 150 policemen remained in Balachaur town.

On Sunday, the diving operation in the canal was stopped and the focus shifted to the ground which resulted in the recovery of the school bags from the abandoned room.

The cops have also collected a CCTV footage in which both the girls were found crossing a road last Friday at 2.05 pm and later in the evening, Manpreet’s body was found floating in the canal.

On Saturday, the Balachaur police had registered a murder case against unidentified persons on the statement of Manpreet’s uncle Balraj Singh, 30, of Nakodar.

He had alleged that there was no water in her stomach and foam was noticed in the mouth. It indicated that someone had killed her before dumping the body into the canal, he added.

The police had also registered a kidnapping case on the statement of Rupinderjeet’s father Kulwant Singh, 45, as he had suspected someone had abducted his daughter.
