JYOTI GUPTA, 20, WAS FOUND DEAD ON THE RAILWAY TRACKS AT REWARI RAILWAY STATION ON LATE ON WEDNESDAY EVENING

CHANDIGARH: Haryana women and child development minister, Kavita Jain, on Saturday directed a probe into the death of international hockey player Jyoti Gupta.

Jyoti, 20, was a promising hockey player and had represented India at the Asian games. She was found dead on the railway tracks at Rewari Railway Station on Wednesday evening. Recently she had attended a three-month national coaching camp at Shilaroo in Himachal Pradesh and was to join another camp later in August.

On Saturday, Jain visited Jyoti’s father, Pramod Gupta, at his residence in Sonepat and expressed her condolences.

Jain said Jyoti’s death was an “irreparable loss” for the state. She also assured the family all possible assistance so that Jyoti’s siblings can continue their studies without any hindrance.

At the family’s request, Jain directed superintendent of police (railways) Kamal Deep Goyal, to conduct a probe into her death.

It is learnt that on Wednesday Jyoti had gone to her coaching academy located in Sonepat Industrial Area in the morning. Later in the day, she reportedly told her parents that she was going to Rohtak to get some corrections made in her Class-10 and 12 mark sheets.

Her family had said that Jyoti had called them in the evening and told them that her bus has broken down. She added that she will reach home soon, the family had said.

However, following this, she reportedly stopped answering their calls.

Late Wednesday night, the police found Jyoti’s body at Rewari Railway Station along with her mobile phone that was ringing. The cops answered the calls and spoke to her parents and could thus identify her.

The police had then said that the driver of a Jaipur-bound train in his statement said that Jyoti died as she came in front of his train.

However, Jyoti’s family said she could not commit suicide.
