5.5 kg heroin seizure: Three on the run, cops register case

Police say the consignmen­t was smuggled from Pakistan and concealed inside a farming equipment; close tabs are being kept on border areas

AMRITSAR: A day after the Amritsar unit of the special task force (STF) arrested three smugglers and recovered 5.5kg heroin and a pistol, efforts are on to nab the remaining three accused.The city police are hopeful of more recoveries.

The STF has registered a case against three persons on the run, Gurpavitta­r Singh, Gurjant Singh and Shinder. The cops here are hopeful that once the absconding accused are nabbed, more revelation­s will be made in the case.

As per the case drug were smuggled in India from Pakistan after establishi­ng contact with the smugglers in the neighbouri­ng nation.

STF additional inspector general (AIG) Rachpal Singh said, “We are making efforts to nab the three absconding accused. More recoveries are likely to emerge with their arrest .” AIG said that a close tab is being kept on the border region to nab the smugglers and maximum consignmen­ts have been recovered.

The STF had arrested smugglers Balwinder Singh , Bohar Singh and Major Singh on Saturday under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotrop­ic Substances Act, 1985 (NDPS).

STF also exposed a network where heroin was procured by Indian smugglers from across the fence and later brought this side after hiding the drugs in farming equipment.

The heroin recovered from the accused was brought to India from a border region in Ferozepur sector.

THE CASE

Following a tip-off, the special task force led by inspector Sukhwinder Randhawa had signalled a car coming from Bhikhiwind side to stop. On checking, 1kg heroin was recovered it. After questionin­g Balwinder, who was driving the car, the STF arrested Major Singh and Bohar Singh.

The accused said they have agricultur­e land across the fence in the Ferozepur sector and get the heroin consignmen­t from Pakistan-based smugglers. The STF had then contacted the BSF and 4.5kg heroin, a 9mm pistol, 3 magazines and 56 cartridges were recovered near the border outpost Lakhe Singh Wala.

The accused will be nabbed soon. More will be revealed after the three are arrested. RACHPAL SINGH, STF additional inspector general
