Cops rescue ‘kidnapped’ woman
NEW DELHI: Allegedly kidnapped from an outer Delhi neighbourhood by three men, who allegedly assaulted and tried to disrobe her inside a running car, a 32-yearold woman was rescued by locals in Rohini on Saturday night.
The public thrashed the suspects and set their car on fire. Two of the suspects were handed over to the police while the third managed to escape.
The arrested men have been booked for kidnapping the woman and assaulting her with an intention to disrobe her. Despite eyewitnesses quoting the woman as saying that she was raped, the police denied that the woman was sexually assaulted.
The woman lives in outer Delhi’s Mangolpuri. She has told police she was out of her home around 7 pm on Saturday when three men in a Hyundai Ascent car approached her and pulled her inside the vehicle.
She kept shouting for help, but the men allegedly beat her and drove her towards Rohini. But as she was being driven through Rohini Sector 21, a group of men on the roadside noticed her.
“I was getting my car repaired when I heard a woman’s cries for help. I looked up to find a woman struggling to get out through the window of a running car,” said an eyewitness.
Meanwhile, two other men, Amit and Aman, decided to check if all was well with the woman. “My friend Aman pointed out the woman to me. We gave the car a chase and intercepted it When we demanded the woman be let off, we were abused,” said Amit.
An argument between the two groups soon turned into a scuffle even as a crowd quickly gathered there. Eyewitnesses said the men appeared drunk and were unwilling to let the woman go.
“The girl appeared dazed. She was only asking to be saved from those men,” said an eyewitness. Aman said she kept saying she was being raped since 7 pm.
The public, meanwhile, was left infuriated by the suspects’ decision to fight back and responded by thrashing the trio. Some miscreants took the opportunity to vandalise the suspects’ car before setting it ablaze.
The police said that by the time they reached the spot, the car was totally burnt and one of the suspects had escaped. They woman was sent for medical examination and treatment and counselled.
The police filed a case and arrested the suspects who turned out to be residents of outer Delhi’s Karala and drivers by profession.
While the police did not comment on the motive behind the alleged kidnapping, they said they needed to establish the sequence of events.
“We have got to know the woman and one of the accused spoke many times before the crime. We are probing,” said MN Tiwari, DCP (outer).
