Road contractor among 3 arrested with 2.4kg opium

JALANDHAR: The rural police arrested three drug peddlers here and seized 2.4 kg opium from their possession in separate incidents on Sunday.

The accused have been identified as Mahinder Pal Verma ,40, of Gobind Nagar, Phagwara, Ram Pal ,48, of Kot Isse Khan and Ravinder Kumar Sharma ,39, of Udham Nagar in Uttrakhand.

As per the police press release, assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Gurdev Singh and his team laid a naka near Jalandhar Public School, Lohian.

The police team stopped a white i-20 car being driven by Mahinder Pal, for checking .

During frisking, the cops seized 1kg opium from the dashboard and arrested the accused. Similarly, assistant sub-inspector (ASIs) Major Singh and Pargat Singh nabbed Ram Pal and Ravinder Kumar Sharma in Raiwal and Darewal villages and seized 1.4 kg opium from them.

During interrogat­ion, Mahinder said that he works as road contractor.

As per cops, Mahinder was earlier a drug addict and later started selling the contraband after buying it from Ravinder.

Further, accused Ram Pal also named Ravinder Sharma, a source from whom he purchased drugs.

Meanwhile, Ravinder told cops that he had been supplying drugs in different cities of the state and is in touch with other peddlers in Uttarakhan­d.

The police said that 3 of them have been booked under Sections 18, 61 and 85 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotrop­ic Substances (NDPS) Act at Lohian police station,will be taken on remand for further questionin­g.
