SGPC scraps chief secretary’s post
The SGPC on Tuesday scrapped the post of its chief secretary in the wake of resignation of former banker Harcharan Singh from the top administrative post. The committee has again given full administrative powers to secretary Roop Singh, who had been pushed to the number 2 position after Harcharan Singh was appointed as chief secretary in 2015.
AMRITSAR: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) on Tuesday scrapped the post of its chief secretary in the wake of resignation of former banker Harcharan Singh from the top administrative post.
The committee has again given full administrative powers to secretary Roop Singh, who had been pushed to the number 2 position after Harcharan Singh was appointed as chief secretary in 2015.
Roop Singh had proceeded on leave for one month, but as soon as Harcharan Singh resigned on July 28, he joined his office without even completing the sanctioned leave.
SGPC chief Kirpal Singh Badungar said Roop Singh has been given the administrative responsibility in view of his “work experience and intellect.”
He said before Harcharan Singh’s joining, Roop Singh saw administrative affairs of the SGPC and would again play the same role.
Roop Singh, who had initially joined the gurdwara body as editor of its monthly magazine ‘Gurmat Parkash’ in 1989, thanked Badungar for resposing confidence in him and assured that he will work with dedication.
Notably, Roop Singh has also written a number of books on Sikhism.
Harcharan Singh, former vicechairman of Punjab and Sindh Bank, took over as SGPC chief secretary in August 2015 during the tenure of Avtar Singh Makkar as SGPC chief. The gurdwara body drew criticism over its move to fix Rs 3 lakh as monthly salary for him. However, the SGPC recently reduced his salary to ₹1 lakh per month.
