ROHTAK Kundu Khap in Rohtak on Tuesday came in support of Haryana IAS officer’s daughter Varnika Kundu, who was allegedly stalked and harassed by Haryana Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Subhash Barala’s son in Chandigarh.

The victim’s father, a senior IAS officer, belongs to Kundu clan. A Khap is a community representing a clan or a group of related clans.

Hundreds of members of the khap body blocked Rohtak-Jind highway near Titoli village by parking trucks on the road for several hours, demanding resignation of Barala and police action against his son, Vikas. The khap members alleged the government was trying to save Vikas by diluting the sections of FIR.

The Khap bodies, who had often been criticised for blaming the victims for the incidents of sexual crimes, took a new stand this time by asking for action against the accused.

“Varnika is our daughter too and what has happened is unacceptable. The government should not cover up the incident because the accused is the son of an influential leader. He must be strictly punished and Barala should resign taking moral responsibility for his son,” Virender Kundu, a khap representative said .

Administration officials rushed to the spot and pacified the protesters by accepting their memorandum and promising to take it to the government. Following which, the khap members lifted their blockade. They, however, warned the administration of a wider stir if proper action is not taken against the accused by August 16.

Rohtak DSP Tahir Hussan said the protesters were demanding appropriate action in connection with Chandigarh woman stalking case.
