Four killed, 21 injured in Jammu road accidents

JAMMU:At least four persons died and 21 others were injured in separate road accidents in the region on Friday.

The police said that around 9am, a multi-utility vehicle collided with a speeding army vehicle coming from the opposite side at Chamalwas near Banihal on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway.Two persons died, while five others were injured in the mishap.

As per the eyewitness, the speeding Army vehicle which collided with the Tata Sumo was moving in the wrong side.The army personnel fled from the spot after the incident.

The police have registered an FIR against an Army Major and other Army personnel.

The deceased have been identified as vehicle driver, Manjeet Singh of Digdol, and police head constable, Nissar Ahmed, a resident Doda, who was going to Batmaloo, Srinagar, to celebrate Eid with the family.

In another accident which happened around 7am, two persons died, and four others were injured.

The police said that a vehicle skidded off the road and fell into Jangalwar nullah flowing in a 150 feet deep gorge near Thathri in Doda district..

Mohammad Ashraf who was behind the wheels, and Ghulam Ali died on the spot. The police with help of locals, evacuated the victims from the gorge, who were later shifted to the government hospital at Doda.

In the third accident, 12 jawans were injured when an Army vehicle rolled down in Karua near Katra.

The police said the Army jawans were inspecting the area around the Katra town, when a part of the road stretch caved in, which dragged the vehicle in the gorge.
