UIPS Research Group work to help cut cost of medicines for diabetes and asthma

Students and faculty of the University Institute of Pharma Studies (UIPS) at Chandigarh University, Gharuan, have been successful in filing five patents in the field of medicine, medicine equippment and oil expolratio­n and refining process. The pathbreaki­ng research was conducted within a timespan of six months by the Core Research Group (CRG) formed at the UIPS, comprising 10 faculty members and 30 students of B.Pharma and M.Sc. Biotechnol­ogy. The patents have been filed with the Indian Patent Office, which is administra­ted by the office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs & Trade Marks (CGPDTM) under the ministry of commerce and industry, government of India.

While giving details about the patents filed by UIPS, Dr. Satbir Sehgal, dean research, Chandigarh University, revealed that, “Out of the total five patent filed, four are in the field of medicines that are aimed to reduce the medication cost meant for chronic or heridatery diseases such as diabetes and asthama, while the fifth patent is for medicines that help in reducing the cost involved in refining and prurifying oil from its raw form.” One of the patents filed by Dr. Manish Gosawmi, principal, UIPS, along with students of biotechnol­ogy is regarding production of an instrument that mimics the oral absorption of drugs in the stomach, helping the test new drugs and their effects. This is crucial in ending the practice of animal testing to test the effects of various drugs.
