FARIDKOT: Five people were killed and two minors injured after a car rammed into a stationary truck at Panjgrain in Faridkot district on Thursday morning.

Four of the five killed were from the same family. The accident took place on the KotakpuraMoga Road at around 5am.

The deceased include Bhooro, 65, her daughters—Davinder Kaur, 35, and Soma Kaur, 32— her grandson son Kalu, 9, and their driver Tarsem Singh, 27. The two injured—Lovepreet Singh, 15, and Nika,12, both sons of Davinder Kaur—were admitted at Guru Gobind Singh Medical College, Faridkot, and are critical.

Bhooro, Soma, Kalu and Tarsem, were residents of Asa Buttar village in Muktsar district, while Davinder Kaur hailed from Thandewala village in the same district.

The family was returning from Malerkotla after attending a religious congregation. As they neared Panjgrain Kalan, the driver lost control and rammed the car into a stationary truck at a roadside hotel.

It took approximately two hours for the police to retrieve the bodies. Soma and her son Kalu were sitting on the front seat, while Davinder, her mother and her sons occupied the rear seat.

Family members informed that on Wednesday evening Bhooro had arranged a cab to attend the congregation. She had also invited her daughters to accompany her. Her relatives added that Bhooro had vowed to attend five such congregations for the family’s goodwill and this was the last one.

Meanwhile, Gurpreet Singh, brother-in-law of Tarsem Singh, said he was the only brother in the family and has six sisters. He is survived by a wife and a threeyear-old son.

Police said the accident occurred because the driver was napping. A probe is on under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code. The bodies were handed over to the families after postmortem.
